Simulations provide insight into pressure distribution in shield machines

The paper “Influence of muck properties and chamber design on pressure distribution in EPB pressure chambers – Insights from computational flow simulations”, co-authored by T.S. Dang and G. Meschke, has just been published online in the International Journal „Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology“.
It is a recent publication of the Research Group on Computational Modeling in Tunneling and Underground Structures.

The paper describes a computational model specifically developed for the numerical simulation of material transport in EPB pressure chambers that is employed to investigate the pressure distribution in two different types of EPB chambers, characterized by a different design of the mixing components, the rotators and the screw conveyor.
